Judith's tip

My favourite first-day plan: cable car up early, before the tour groups arrive. The light is extraordinary and you'll almost have the monkeys to yourself. Walk back down via the Mediterranean Steps โ€” about 90 minutes, and the views are unreal.

The Rock

The Upper Rock Nature Reserve is the reason most people come to Gibraltar โ€” limestone cliffs, wild macaques, secret caves and panoramic views.

Go early โ€” before 9am. The tour buses arrive mid-morning and the cable car queues fill up fast. The golden-hour light on the Rock is stunning, and the macaques are more active when it's cooler.

Gibraltar's food scene blends British, Spanish, Moroccan and Mediterranean traditions in surprising ways.

Don't miss the fish and chips on Main Street โ€” a Gibraltar institution. The fresh produce market is worth a look on a weekday morning. For something special in the evening, ask me when you arrive and I'll share my current favourite.

My favourite kind of evening: dinner on Main Street, then drinks in Irish Town. Unpretentious, friendly, and you never feel like a tourist. Friday nights are the best โ€” a real local energy that's hard to find elsewhere.

Community

Jewish Life in Gibraltar

One of the oldest and most vibrant Sephardic Jewish communities in the world โ€” quietly present for over 300 years.

Flemish Synagogue

Around 600โ€“800 community members live among a total population of 34,000 โ€” one of the most significant Jewish communities per capita anywhere in the world. The community is predominantly Sephardic, descended from families from Morocco, the Ottoman Empire and the Iberian Peninsula. The oldest synagogue, Shaar Hashamayim, dates back to 1724.

Kosher food in Gibraltar

Gibraltar has a small but thriving observant Jewish community, and you can eat well here every day of the week. Two of the places I send my guests to most often:

Grill & Grain

Meaty

Gibraltar's go-to kosher meat restaurant โ€” grilled meats, shawarma, burgers, salads. Casual and warm, popular with families and travelling guests.

Amar's Bakery & Restaurant

Milky

A dairy bakery and restaurant โ€” fresh bread, pastries, pizzas, pasta, fish, salads, and proper coffee. Lovely for breakfast or a relaxed lunch on the way back from sightseeing.

Judith

A personal welcome from Judith

โ€œGibraltar's Jewish community is a special part of what makes this place unique. I have kosher-standard apartments for observant guests, and I'm happy to share everything I know about the community, the synagogues, and where to find what you need.โ€

Judith's secret guide

In her own words

The thing most visitors miss is the southern end of the Rock at dusk. Take a cab to Europa Point in the late afternoon โ€” the lighthouse turns on, the light on the Strait is golden, and you can see Morocco perfectly. It's the most beautiful thing in Gibraltar and almost nobody times it right.

There's a small viewing area above Rosia Bay locals use for Sunday-morning picnics. You can see the Bay of Gibraltar and the Atlantic at once. No sign for it โ€” walk south past Governor's Beach and you'll find it.

Main Street is loveliest before 9am โ€” when the shops are just opening and there are barely any tourists. The light comes through the southern end and makes the old buildings glow. Walk the full length before breakfast.

For sunset, the western Alameda Gardens are underrated. Most people head to Europa Point, but the gardens have a different quality โ€” you're looking across the Bay to Spain and Algeciras with ships moving slowly across the water. Very peaceful.

One last thing: Gibraltar is a place you experience with your feet. Walk everywhere. The scale is human. Turn a corner and you'll find a courtyard, a small shrine, an unexpectedly beautiful view. Don't plan too much. Just walk.
